Earning Your Illinois High School Diploma!
If you're an adult living in Illinois who has not earned a high school diploma, there are several ways you could do this. You can earn your diploma by taking classes in person, completing an independent study program or through an online program.
Earning Your Illinois High School Diploma
Adult Education Centers
If you're over the age of 18, you may participate in a diploma program at an adult education center offered in some Illinois school districts. These programs allow adults to receive credit through work experience and training programs. You work with teachers to complete the course requirements set by your previous high school. If you're between the ages of 16-21 and have been out of school for more than 120 days, you might consider participating in a more intensive adult education program that requires you to be in attendance for at least four hours a day, five days a week.
The curriculum for a high school diploma program might include life skills courses, such as career planning and food study. Some programs may also provide foreign language courses. Additional topics can include consumer and health education, algebra and chemistry.
Study at a Local Community College
If you're age 16 or older, you might consider earning your high school diploma through your local community college. With permission from your former high school, you may be able to take only the classes you haven't completed to earn your diploma. You meet with an instructor weekly to hand in assignments and take exams. These types of programs allow you to complete courses at a pace convenient for you.
Bilingual Programs
For Spanish-speaking adults age 25 and older who possess basic English skills, there may be bilingual high school diploma programs available at some adult high schools. These programs allow adults to attend classes in the evening and on the weekends so that they may continue to work while enrolled.
Online High School Diplomas
Earning an online high school diploma is another option. These programs are often self paced; some allow transfer of previous high school credits. Because not all employers and colleges in Illinois may accept a high school diploma completed online, you should inquire about it with prospective employers or colleges.
