Earning a High School Diploma in Mississippi

For those individuals who did not earn their diplomas in the normal school system, Mississippi offers adult basic education and the General Educational Development (GED) credential to help them catch up. These programs are offered through the Mississippi Community College Board (www.mccb.edu). Several community colleges also offer other adult learning programs, such as English as a second language (ESL) classes or life skills workshops that may help improve one's relationship with his or her employer, family or community.

State High School Graduation Requirements

Mississippi requires that regular high school students complete 24 credits in order to graduate from high school. This includes units in English, algebra, biology, history, geography, economics, health, physical education, computer and arts. Each school district may add additional requirements on top of these.

Adult Education

Adult learners may wish to enroll in independent study courses that can be taken online from home if their high school education was interrupted. Adults who are 18 years of age or older must submit any prior high school coursework or GED test scores before starting the program. Some of these programs only require students to complete 23 units to earn their diploma. However, the most common way for adults in Mississippi to pursue a high school education is by taking the GED test and earning a high school equivalency diploma.

General Educational Development Credential

The GED exam is a series of five tests and is accepted as the equivalent to a high school diploma at most colleges and training programs. Community colleges often offer GED preparation classes as part of their adult basic education program. Fees, eligibility requirements and testing schedules may vary, so contacting the closest community college is recommended.

Adult Basic Education

Adult basic education courses are also offered and usually cover topics in reading, writing and mathematics. Upon entering one of these programs, students typically must take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to determine their current skill levels in various subjects. This helps the community college determine what courses would be the most appropriate for each individual student.
