Earning Your New Jersey High School Diploma!
If you're an adult living in New Jersey and don't have your high school diploma, you might consider enrolling in an adult high school. Through the completion of coursework, participating in training experiences and by passing an assessment exam, you could earn a New Jersey Adult High School Diploma.
New Jersey Adult High School
You may earn a New Jersey Adult High School Diploma through an adult high school program offered through the New Jersey public school system. The New Jersey Department of Education has a listing of adult high schools throughout the state on its website (www.state.nj.us).
Eligibility Requirements
According to the Hamilton Township School District, eligibility requirements to earn your high school diploma as an adult show you must be a resident of New Jersey (www.hamilton.k12.nj.us). Along with providing an official transcript from your previously attended high school, you must also meet the following requirements:
- You should be at least 16 years old
- You shouldn't currently be enrolled in high school
- You shouldn't have previously earned your high school diploma
How to Earn Credits
A total of 120 credits are needed to earn your adult high school diploma. Previously earned credits from high school, as noted on your official transcript, may be applied toward your total credits needed. Work experience, apprentice training, military training, driver's education and the comprehensive exam scores could also be applied as credits in addition to the required coursework at the adult high school.
Coursework
Coursework earned toward an adult high school diploma could be taken in a traditional manner or with flexibility. Required classes include subjects such as mathematics, science, language arts and history. You might also have the option of choosing from other courses and subjects, including:

- Communication
- Fine arts
- Career development
- Business education
Testing Requirements
To enter into an adult high school program, you may be required to take an adult basic education exam to determine your current academic knowledge and skills. To earn your diploma, you must pass the high school proficiency assessment (HSPA) as required by the New Jersey Department of Education. This exam tests your academic knowledge in literacy and mathematics and is based on New Jersey's curriculum standards.
