Earning Your West Virginia High School Diploma!
If you have not earned your high school diploma, you have several options as an adult learner. West Virginia offers some alternatives to earning your high school diploma, both on-campus and online.
How to Earn Your West Virginia High School Diploma
Many employers or colleges require a high school diploma or equivalent. If you did not earn your diploma at a traditional high school, West Virginia offers both Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Development (GED) options to help you succeed in your goals.
West Virginia High School Diploma Requirements
The state of West Virginia requires that students earn at least 18 credits, including English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, health and one of the arts. Additionally, the state asks that students be provided with opportunities for career development, experiential learning and technology. Counties may have additional requirements outside of completing the basic courses.
Adult Basic Education
West Virginia's ABE program is designed to help adult learners become successful in their professional, personal and academic goals. They offer a variety of classes to reach these goals, including an ABE-to-College program. This bridge program is designed to provide a single path to help individuals learn basic competencies and continue through into a post-secondary program.
The ABE programs, which are offered online or in-person, can be personalized to help develop specific skills and provide the necessary support services to help students make the transition. A series of assessments, including Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE), will be used to make sure students are placed in the proper courses.
General Educational Development
The GED is a series of five exams that tests basic competencies in five subject areas, including language arts-reading, language arts-writing, science, mathematics and social studies. Successfully passing the GED exam in West Virginia requires a score of no less than 410 on each individual test, as well as an overall score of at least 2250. Adult students who pass will receive a GED certificate from West Virginia's Department of Education.
