Education Director: Job Description, Duties and Requirements
Education directors research and evaluate the curricula, teaching procedures and educational materials within an education system. They may work in schools or in a variety of other settings that offer education. A master's degree in education administration is generally the minimal educational requirement for this career.
Education Director Job Description
Education directors, also known as instructional coordinators, direct and shape the curricula and teaching processes in a school or school district. Some education directors run the educational programs at non-school settings, such as museums, businesses and non-profit organizations. They work with educational committees and advisory groups within the community to come up with the most appropriate curricula to meet the needs of their students.
Another key role of an education director is providing advice to teachers, school administrators and support staff. They provide training in the use of educational materials and techniques. Education directors advise educators on how to comply with local, state and national standards, as well as work closely with school boards to apply the board's rules and regulations.
Education Director Job Duties
Education directors research and select textbooks, as well as other educational materials and order or authorize the purchase of supplies. They may also be involved with the research and design of educational materials and instructional methods. Other job duties of education directors include mentoring new teachers, teaching workshops or seminars and observing teachers in the classroom. Additionally, education directors may provide constructive feedback based on teacher evaluations.
Education Director Job Requirements
Education administrators typically begin their careers as a teacher then further their education in the areas of curriculum development and administration. Many have a master's degree in education administration or education leadership. These programs explore topics such as education reform, education law, policy implementation, leadership and curriculum theory. The program also exposes prospective education administrators to educational research.
In many states, school administrators, including education directors, are also required to hold a license. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, some states require a teaching license, but others prefer an education administrator license (www.bls.gov). The requirements for licensure vary by state, but typically include a series of exams. Additionally, the National Child Care Association offers National Administrators Credential for education directors.
Salary and Job Outlook
According to the BLS, instructional coordinators are increasingly needed to help teachers improve their teaching skills, and this occupation is expected to see average job growth of 13% over the 2012-2022 decade. The BLS reported that as of May 2012, instructional coordinators made a median annual salary of $60,050.
