Floral Arrangement Classes and Training Program Information
Floral arrangement classes are usually offered as part of a floral design or floriculture certificate program. Some colleges may offer classes as part of a non-credit diploma program. These classes focus on providing students with the technical skills needed to produce floral designs and arrangements for a variety of occasions.
List of Courses
Introduction to Floriculture Course
This course is for the beginner and introduces students to the basics of floral design. Students learn about different flower options, foliage, design techniques, basic supplies, plant identification and packaging. This course also covers terminology, plant science and proper plant care. Students get the basic skills needed to begin designing arrangements and putting together designs.
Special Occasion Arrangements Course
This course usually comes towards the beginning or middle of a program and covers all types of special arrangements used for occasions like weddings, parties and holidays. Students are taught how to use flowers to create an atmosphere, how to choose flowers for particular events, how to combine flowers for the right fragrance and how to add in accent pieces to a arrangement. Students also learn how to create corsages, centerpieces, bows, door decorations and other flower pieces. Pricing and consultation techniques are also covered. Students should learn to produce special flower designs to clients' specifications.
Contemporary Arrangements and Design Course
Contemporary flower arrangements use techniques that are beyond the basics. These arrangements are usually used to make a statement and act as the center of attention. Students learn how to create floral designs using methods like Ikebana, a Japanese flower arranging technique. Students learn to add a professional look and a creative edge to their work. Contemporary techniques are an intermediate to advanced level of floral design, so this course is taught late in a program.
Sympathy Arrangements Course
Sympathy arrangements are used for funerals and sent as bereavement gifts. This is a unique area of flower arranging and the course usually falls near the end of a program. Students learn about traditional techniques in sympathy design, including casket and graveside pieces. This course also covers marketing and client services.
Training Program Information
A floral design training program may last from a few weeks to a year. In shorter programs, classes are usually focused on one topic each. A longer program may be similar to a degree with series of classes on one topic. Programs in floral design or floriculture may be offered at vocational schools and colleges. Classes are usually structured to provide hands-on work so students can get practical experience in floral design techniques.
