Health Technologist: Educational Requirements for Entering the Field of Medical and Health Technology
Completing certain educational requirements is necessary to enter the health technology field. Health technologists participate in the treatment and diagnosis of medical problems that play a significant role in the health care of people. There are specific training levels for each career. Training programs are available at schools, colleges, and universities, which may result in a diploma, certification, or degree.
The health care industry is broad and covers a wide range of organizations from a small town office practice with one physician to busy inner-city hospitals where thousands of people are employed.
Educational Requirements for Health Technologists
Educational requirements for health technologist (a.k.a. medical and health technology) occupations vary. At a residential care facility, a health technologist assistant may have just a high school diploma. The next level would include health technologist workers who have jobs that require certification or an associate or bachelor degree. There are also physicians and surgeons amongst the highest skilled with many years of education and training beyond the graduate level.
Health technologists, who work in a laboratory doing clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology, and body fluid analysis, are always under the supervision of a medical director. A two-year program or an associate's degree is the entry level standard for the health technologist working in a medical lab or in other positions such as a dental hygienist or radiology technologist.
Programs and Wages
Most health technology programs require the student to maintain a 2.5 grade level average and complete 64 to 69 credit hours. Entry-level pay, according to the National O*NET OnLine www.online.onetcenter.org, at the national level is $12.19 hourly, and $25,350 annually.
