How to Choose a Health Science School
Health science as a field of study provides students with a foundation in healthcare topics such as health promotion and disease prevention, and it can include specific areas of study as preparation for higher levels of education. Students can complete associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs in health science.
How to Select a Health Science School
The selection of a health science program will largely depend on a student's individual goals and previous work or educational experience. Students at the undergraduate level who are undecided on their educational path may enroll in a general studies health science associate degree program. Those enrolling in associate degree programs may also choose to complete concentration options preparing them for clinical work in areas such as radiography or respiratory therapy.
Bachelor's degree programs may prepare students for non-clinical career paths, such as health promotion or occupational safety research. Students may also use 4-year programs as foundational degrees for careers that require advanced degrees, such as physical therapy or medicine. Students with scholarly interest in one of many health science fields, and who wish to engage in research and publish academic articles, may consider completing a master's degree program.
Another consideration for students may be available learning formats. Distance learning options, such as programs completed over the Internet, can provide students with professional or family obligations with flexible scheduling options. Programs are available either fully- or partially-online. Students who already hold an associate degree in a related field may enroll in an online bachelor's degree program to continue their education. Online master's degree programs may be more appropriate for working professionals with bachelor's degrees seeking further specialization.
Health Science Program Overviews
Associate Degree in Health Science
Associate degree programs in health science may be available as general studies training courses for students interested in the health industry, or they may offer concentration options in subjects like medical technology, health administration or radiological science. Core coursework may include anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, psychology and microbiology. General education courses and basic health science courses may help students transfer directly into bachelor's degree programs.
Bachelor's Degree in Health Science
Bachelor's degree programs may be continued from a previously completed associate degree or can be taken as full 4-year programs. Educational tracks in subjects like health safety, health management, disease prevention and pre-medical may be available. Courses in biology, statistics, public health, pathophysiology, epidemiology, nutrition, health law and organic chemistry may be required as part of the core curriculum.
Master's Degree in Health Science
The master's degree program curriculum is largely based on the student's area of concentration, and it may require a specific concentration for successful completion. Concentrations are available in areas such as health policy, environmental health, sports medicine, health economics and bioinformatics. Depending on the concentration, students may complete a final project or research thesis.
