Industrial Technician: Job Description, Duties, Outlook and Requirements

Industrial technicians are responsible for studying the efficiency and mechanics of processes in a given field and making recommendations to refine or overhaul them. Industrial technicians may focus on one of several different specialization areas, such as construction, management or drafting.

Job Description for an Industrial Technician

Industrial technicians help to determine the best and most efficient use of resources for a given project. This may include personnel, equipment, machines and financial resources. Industrial technicians may work under engineers and have a variety of responsibilities depending on the setting, facility and industry in which they work. In addition to providing analysis, they may be involved in developing and testing new solutions to work problems.

Job Duties for an Industrial Technician

Planning the flow of work or production, studying process efficiency and analyzing results may all be among industrial technicians' tasks. They may study the time, method, motions, process and requirements for a given product or operation. In addition, they may read schematics and diagrams, study statistics, apply formulas and interpret results. This research data is then used to formulate plans for improved efficiency and production. Industrial technicians can assist in the implementation of these plans as well as testing to ensure the changes are successful.

Employment Outlook for an Industrial Technician

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), job opportunities for industrial engineering technicians are expected to increase four percent nationwide between 2010 and 2020, which is below the average predicted increase for all jobs. Growth is expected to be driven by companies' continuing need to streamline processes and increase efficiency. Industrial technicians can work in a variety of fields and environments depending on their chosen specialization, including manufacturing plants, retail stores and refineries. In 2012, the BLS listed a median annual salary of $50,980 for industrial engineering technicians.

Career and Education Requirements for an Industrial Technician

The BLS reports that many employers seek technicians with an associate's degree or higher. In some cases, a shorter certificate program can also be sufficient. Certificate and associate's degree programs in industrial technology may cover subjects such as pipefitting, carpentry, hydraulics, machining, welding, automation, mechanical systems and national codes. Some industrial technology programs have concentrations in areas such as design drafting, construction technology, occupational health and employee supervision.
