Certificate Programs in Intranet Programming

Intranet programming generally is not available at the diploma level. However, many community colleges and technical schools offer various certificate programs that include intranet programming in the curriculum. These certificates may be in computer programming or web development. Students learn to write programming for intranet applications and manage these in-house networking systems. In addition, graduates leave the certificate program with knowledge of how to install and work with various types of web servers, manage network security and design web pages. Most programs require a high school diploma or GED for admission.

Course Topics

Students in a certificate program focused on intranet programming take courses in various popular programming languages. They learn skills for website development and may be required to complete an internship. Course offerings may include:

  • Java programming
  • C++
  • Website development
  • Network security
  • Website administration

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that employment of all types of computer programmers, including intranet programmers, would grow by 12% from 2010-2020, about as fast as average for all occupations (www.bls.gov). The BLS said it expected that employers would continue the trend of companies outsourcing their programming jobs to workers in other countries where labor is cheaper. However, the BLS noted, some firms would still hire programmers in parts of the United States where wages are lower. The median annual salary for a programmer was $72,630 as of May 2011, the BLS noted.

Continuing Education

The BLS says job opportunities will be best for programmers who hold a bachelor's degree and who are familiar with a variety of programming languages. Some employers will also consider programmers with associate's degrees, according to the BLS. Many course credits from a certificate program may transfer into credits for a higher degree. In addition to possibly pursuing an advanced degree, programmers should also keep up with new technologies, the BLS says, such as writing programming applications for mobile devices.
