Free Online Course Info and Requirements
Several colleges and universities offer free computerized accounting courses and programs; some of these programs are offered through OpenCourseWare (OCW) systems. These courses and training programs don't cost anything and consist of various learning materials, including lectures, assignments and exams. A computer and Internet access are required to view videos or readings online. Because of the free nature of these courses, colleges and universities don't offer credits or certification to students who utilize them.

The Small Business Development Center at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania offers four accounting courses available online. The accounting courses consist of slides demonstrating and explaining main accounting ideas, such as profit and loss statements, balance sheets and cash budgets.
Accounting 101 offers 149 animated slides designed to teach students how to complete the three important financial statements in the accounting world: balance statement, cash flow statement and income statement. The Creating a Profit and Loss Statement course uses interactive case studies and audio-stream graphics as learning tools. Students learn the importance of a profit and loss statement and learn to create their own with the use of a template provided in the course. There's also a glossary of terms.
Preparing a Balance Sheet is a free online course that's beneficial to aspiring accountants or business owners interested in knowing where their companies stand financially. Upon completing the course, students will have the skills to prepare balance sheets and understand accounting terminology. Preparing a Cash Budget is also beneficial to accounting students or individuals starting off in the business world. Using interactive case studies and streaming graphics, the free course teaches students the importance of having a cash budget, in both their personal and professional work. Students learn how to complete a cash budget, using resources such as a template and the glossary.

MIT's free accounting courses are available through its OCW system. The courses include downloadable lecture notes, sample assignments and, in some instances, sample exams.
Business Analysis Using Financial Statements is designed to help aspiring accounting professionals learn how to analyze and determine the value of a firm or business by looking at financial statements. The curriculum includes lecture notes, assignments with solutions and exams. Financial Accounting is a graduate course that was designed for first-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) students. Topics cover several areas of accounting, including annual reports and financial statements, accounts receivable, cost of goods inventory, cash flow and revenue recognition. Students learn through various lecture notes.
Introduction to Financial and Managerial Accounting is an OCW class designed for students interested in learning about corporate accounting. Emphasis is placed on how to read financial and managerial reports instead of how to prepare them. There are 22 lectures in PDF format on topics such as the accounting process, revenue recognition, cost concepts and allocation of costs. This course also includes seven problem sets and seven exams, all with corresponding solutions.
A graduate course aimed at individuals who are interested in becoming senior managers or management consultants, Management Accounting and Control is an OCW course that offers lecture notes on various management accounting topics, such as budgeting, organizational architecture, product costing and decision making. The Taxes and Business Strategy course takes a less traditional approach to taxes by incorporating business strategies into accounting factors. Lecture notes in PDF format are available on a variety of topics, including marginal tax rates, compensation, taxable acquisitions and tax-free acquisitions.
New Jersey Institute of Technology

Management Accounting covers accounting concepts, such as recording transactions, income statements and cash flows. It also builds on knowledge students have acquired in managerial accounting courses. All of the 17 lectures are 1-hour videos that can be downloaded directly from the site. The course also provides students with a syllabus and welcome letter that are respectively available in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word files.
