While most of these courses offer substantial resources, many of them do not provide the full content of the on-campus courses. Content is determined by what each professor chooses to make available. Though these classes may contain much of the same content as the credit-bearing ones on which they're based, students do not receive actual college credit for completing them.

Free Online Veterinary Courses

Animal Behavior at MIT

This online course provides lecture notes and audio files of class sessions. Students receive instruction about animal learning, genes, and communication, as well as sociobiology and cultural determinism. The supplied notes may be downloaded, while the audio files may be accessed online or downloaded. Not all lecture sessions are available in either audio or text form.

Animal Diversity at African Virtual University

This course is viewable online as a full text document of the class content, including lecture notes, practice questions with answers, and research exercises. The full course may also be downloaded as a PDF or TXT file. Topics covered include animal classification, economic implications of animals, and animal evolutionary trends. Students need be familiar with the hierarchical biological classification process for animals and other living organisms.

Dog Examination Techniques at the University of Nottingham

This video introduces students to the basic techniques used in the physical examination of dogs. The video discusses safety precautions, common examination equipment, and the proper methods of dog restraint. Demonstrations are given in observation techniques, palpitation methods, and stethoscope use.

Histology at Tufts University

Online materials available from this class include notes from selected lectures and a collection of captioned images organized according to bodily system. For example, image galleries of veterinary reproductive, urinary, cardiovascular, and digestive systems are all accessible. Students may view individual slides online or download a PDF file of each image collection.

Human-Animal Relationships at Tufts University

From this class, students may access a text overview of each lecture, including reflective journal questions, and, for many sessions, links to PDF versions of at least one of the assigned readings. The first lecture also includes a four-page introduction and overview of the course content and aims. Slides from some class sessions, such as those discussing shelter issues, farm animals, and research alternatives, are provided in downloadable PDF format.

Law and Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University

This course offers slides of each lecture that address areas such as informed consent, research animals, state practice acts, and malpractice. In addition, students may access an overview of each class session that includes the respective reading lists. Brief supplementary documents that contain things like acronym definitions and a list of online resources are available to download.

Population Health at Tufts University

Students may access a written overview of each session, as well as slides that contain lecture content. The course covers topics like the accessibility of population-based health services, health and safety laws and regulations, and veterinary medicine's future in a public health context. Each session overview contains a list of required readings, sometimes with links to corresponding downloads or web pages. The slides may be viewed individually online or downloaded as one PDF file.

Veterinary Respiratory Pathophysiology at Tufts University

Detailed text notes are available for about one third of the total class sessions. These notes are offered on such subjects as respiratory system clinical evaluation, pulmonary vascular disease, and pleura and mediastinum diseases. Learners also have access to several image galleries of respiratory system components and pathologies.

Zoological Medicine at Tufts University

Students can explore amphibian, reptile, avian, and small mammal health, as well as topics like exotic companion animals and wildlife medicine. Comprehensive written notes from all class sessions may be viewed online (but are not available for download) and include lists of book, article, and website resources and references. Additional reading lists and downloadable guides on such subjects as pet birds and medicine dosage determination are available as supplementary resources.
