1. University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Over 58,000 students are enrolled in the University of Michigan's three campuses throughout the state. The well-recognized flagship campus at Ann Arbor was named the fourth best public university in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2010. In 2008, the magazine also named the university second in its ranking of the top graduate social work programs. Students in the Master of Social Work program specialize in a particular practice method and area of concentration. The required internship program places students in over 475 agencies, including correctional facilities, public schools, psychiatric centers and advocacy groups.

2. Columbia University in New York, NY

Founded in 1754, Columbia is a wellknown Ivy League school and the fifth oldest university in the U.S. It was seventh in a 2010 ranking of top national universities by U.S. News and World Report.

Columbia offers a Master of Science in Social Work, which may be completed in two years full time or up to four years part time. Students select a primary method of practice and area of practice. Practice areas include aging, family and youth, mental health and disabilities, and immigrant and refugee services. During the course of study, students are required to perform 600-1200 hours of fieldwork at social organizations and agencies. In 2009, U.S. News and World Report ranked Columbia the fourth best graduate school in the nation for social work.
