List of Top Ocean Engineering Schools and Colleges
Students in ocean engineering programs apply engineering and math principles to studying and understanding the ocean, ocean thermal dynamics and how to preserve the ocean's unique resources. Classes include oceanography, ocean system design, dynamics and vibration. Specific degree names may differ, but Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D.s are all possible for this field. Graduates can work in ecology, environmental protection, offshore oil recovery and marine climate monitoring.
Best Ocean Engineering Programs
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) started in 1865 as an institution designed to be relevant to American society, which was becoming increasingly industrialized. Today, MIT is first among graduate engineering programs, as well as first among undergrad engineering programs, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2010. The school's ocean engineering programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical and Ocean Engineering program is a mechanical engineering program that focuses in ocean engineering. Students learn about ocean exploration and how the oceans are used for transportation and defense, as well as other resources. Classes include marine power and propulsion, acoustics and hydrodynamics.
A Master of Science (M.S.) in Ocean Engineering program is available for those interested in oceanic development and social concern issues. Courses include plates and shells, acoustics and sensing, management of marine systems and oceanographic systems.
The M.S. in Applied Ocean Science and Engineering is a joint program offered along with the Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute. The program is designed for those who wish to work in the exploration, measurement, mapping and use of the oceans. It involves areas of study in observing systems and sensors, vehicles and submarines, environmental fluid mechanics and ocean acoustics.
The doctoral programs available at MIT are the Doctor or Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Science (Sc.D.), which differ in name only. The programs include a Ph.D. or Sc.D. in Ocean Engineering program and a Ph.D. or Sc.D. in Applied Ocean Science and Engineering.

2. Texas A & M University at College Station
Texas A & M University was founded in 1876 and is the oldest public institution of higher learning in Texas. The ocean engineering programs at Texas A & M are accredited by ABET.
The B.S. in Coastal and Ocean Engineering program was ranked 17th among undergraduate engineering programs in 2010 by U.S. News & World Report. The program has fields of study in oceanography, ocean engineering design structural mechanics, ocean wave mechanics, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, coastal engineering, environmental fluid mechanics, marine structures, naval architecture, diving and moored systems, underwater acoustics and laboratory measurements.
A Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Coastal and Ocean Engineering program is available for those who want to perform oceanic engineering research. Coursework includes dynamics of offshore structures, physical oceanography and ocean wave mechanics. An M.S. in Coastal and Ocean Engineering program has similar coursework but more research than the M.Eng. program.
Students in the Ph.D. in Coastal and Ocean Engineering program can emphasize ocean engineering, offshore engineering or coastal engineering. Classes available include geotechnical site investigation, structural reliability and turbulence theory. Texas A & M's graduate engineering program was ranked 12th in 2010 by U.S. News & World Report.
