Petroleum Engineering School Overviews
Students interested in studying petroleum engineering have many options, but the best options include Stanford University and Marietta College. Stanford is a nationally ranked school with master's and Ph.D. programs in petroleum engineering that focus on the science and engineering of finding and extracting energy resources. Marietta College is a regionally ranked school that offers a bachelor's program in the field.
1. Stanford University in California
Stanford University was ranked second among graduate engineering programs by U.S. News & World Report in 2010. Stanford's Master of Science (M.S.) in Petroleum Engineering program trains students for advanced roles in the petroleum engineering industry. Research areas include energy industry management, geothermal energy, groundwater and environmental issues, non-Newtonian fluids, oil and gas recovery, pipeline transport, reservoir modeling, simulation and engineering, carbon sequestration and transient well analysis. Classes cover topics in aquatic chemistry, contaminant hydrogeology, gas injection processes and heat transfer. Students can take additional engineering coursework and complete an engineer degree in petroleum engineering or energy resources engineering.
A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program prepares students for a career in research of petroleum engineering. Students take petroleum engineering courses, including equilibrium thermodynamics and petroleum geology exploration. They can opt for coursework from the energy resources engineering area such as geothermal reservoir engineering and environmental economics.
2. Marietta College in Ohio
In 2011, Marietta College was named the second best university in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report. Marietta's Bachelor of Arts in Petroleum Engineering is a liberal arts program that accepts only 60 freshmen each year, and is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission. Students complete internships in the field of petroleum engineering, as well as a team design project during in their final semester. The curriculum includes petrophysics, hydrocarbon phase behavior, reservoir engineering and natural gas engineering.
