List of Top Petroleum Engineering Schools and Colleges

A program in petroleum engineering prepares learners for careers in the drilling, exploration and transportation of oil and gas. Students take coursework in math, geology, chemistry, physics and fluid dynamics. Those with an undergrad degree can work in office positions such as facilities production and surveillance, while those with a graduate degree work in on-site drilling operations, reservoir engineering and research.

Best Petroleum Engineering Programs

1. Stanford University in Stanford, California

Stanford University was founded in 1891, and at over 8,100 acres it is the largest college campus in the U.S. Stanford was ranked second among graduate engineering programs by U.S. News & World Report in 2010.

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Petroleum Engineering program trains students for advanced roles in the petroleum engineering industry. Research areas are comprised of energy industry management, geothermal energy, groundwater and environmental issues, non-Newtonian fluids, oil and gas recovery, pipeline transport, reservoir modeling, simulation and engineering, carbon sequestration and transient well analysis. Classes include aquatic chemistry, contaminant hydrogeology, gas injection processes and heat transfer. The Engineer in Petroleum Engineering or Energy Resources Engineering program is a 3-year program that provides more specialization than the M.S. degree program through additional engineering coursework.

A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program prepares students for a career in research of petroleum engineering. Students take petroleum-engineering courses, including equilibrium thermodynamics and petroleum geology exploration. They can opt for coursework from the energy resources engineering area such as geothermal reservoir engineering and environmental economics.
