1. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) ranked 29th on the U.S. News & World Report list of best colleges in the nation for 2012. The university's Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures offers a B.A. in German. Students in this program can concentrate in German literature and culture or German studies. UNC-CH also offers a joint Ph.D. program in German studies with Duke University.

2. Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts

Amherst College is a private liberal arts school that placed fourth on the Forbes list of 'America's Top Colleges' for 2011. Amherst's German Department offers a B.A. in German. Once enrolled, students explore German literature and language, as well as European history, politics and economics. Additionally, the department features a student exchange program, through which students can study German at Gottingen University for a summer, semester or full year.

3. Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic and Jesuit college in America, ranked 22nd among the best universities in the nation for 2012, according to U.S. News & World Report. Georgetown's German Department offers a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in German. Undergraduate German majors can pursue a concentration in business that includes courses in accounting, finance and marketing. They can also minor or double major in a second language, such as French or Japanese. Graduate studies include topics in German literacy and linguistic theory.
