While both offer master's degree programs related to the field of holistic medicine, Bastyr's programs tend to focus primarily on naturopathic medicine while the programs available through Georgetown University use natural and holistic practices in conjunction with traditional, Western medicine. Dual degree programs are offered by both universities, allowing students to learn acupuncture or physiology and biophysics, as well. Top Schools to Study Holistic Medicine

1. Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA

Bastyr University is located near Seattle, Washington, and dedicated to offering degree programs in holistic medicine. The School of Naturopathic Medicine offers four-year and five-year tracks for its Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.) program. The N.D. program has similar curriculum and clinical training as an M.D. program and offers coursework in botanical medicine, spinal manipulation, and homeopathy.

Students in the N.D. program can pursue a dual degree with a Master of Science (M.S.) in Acupuncture or a M.S. in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Bastyr is accredited by the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges and the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education.

2. Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Georgetown's medical school program was ranked 79th in 2010 by U.S. News & World Report. Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. offers a M.S. in Physiology degree for students who wish to work in CAM law or regulatory affairs, pursue CAM research, or use CAM methods in medical practice. Program coursework includes the study of herbal medicine and nutritional supplements, medical ethics, and mind-body medicine.

The Georgetown University School of Medicine also offers a five-year joint M.D./M.S. in Physiology and Biophysics with a specialization in complementary and alternative medicine. The program allows students who are part of a traditional M.D. degree to integrate principles of holistic medicine into their studies.
