Milwaukee Area Technical College in Milwaukee, WI

The Milwaukee Area Technical College has numerous cosmetology and barber programs for students interested in becoming hair stylists. The technical diploma for cosmetology at the school of business here can be completed in a year to 18 months. An externship is necessary to graduate from the program. In this program, an emphasis is put on adding an artistic flair to hairstyles. Hair tinting, permanent waves, scalp treatments, client services and business skills are all classes that have to be completed in this program.

Additional programs include professional certificates for hair stylist instructors and hair stylist managers. These programs normally require licensure and some field experience.

Pueblo Community College in Pueblo, CO

A cosmetology certificate and associate's degree are available at Pueblo Community College. A special hair stylist certificate can also be obtained. The hair stylist certificate is broken up into three semesters worth of classes. After the introduction courses, students can expect to take the following classes: sanitation, rules and regulations, chemical textures, hair cutting, hair coloring, hair styling, management and ethics.
