A number of certificates in the field are available through one of the schools, while the other features an associate's degree; the associate's degree program trains students to work on all small motors, not just marine equipment. Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, WA

Skagit Valley College was ranked #19 on Washington Monthly's list of the best 50 community colleges in 2010. The school offers several certificate programs including a marine composites technician certificate, marine propulsion and diesel technician certificate, and marine systems electrical technician certificate. These programs can be completed with three quarters of full-time study. Classes in these programs cover topics like marine construction, marine repair, marine materials, computer aided marine developments, marine trade business, and marine quality assurance.

Skagit Valley College allows students to prepare themselves for a variety marine trades by teaching how to work with engine equipment and how to repair hulls. Students learn about outboard engines, vessels electrical systems, outdrive propulsion systems, and inboard engines.

Alexandria Technical & Community College in Minnesota

In 2010, Washington Monthly ranked Alexandria Technical and Community College #8 on its list of 50 best community colleges. The 72-credit program confers an associate's degree in marine and small engine mechanics to graduates. In addition to work on marine engines, students study the repair of snowmobiles and motorcycles. Coursework in this program includes an examination of marine drive systems, marine engine systems, marine fuel systems, marine electrical systems, outdoor power equipment, and technical math.
