Top Naturopathic Medicine Programs

1. National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR

Established in the early 1950s, the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) has the oldest accredited naturopathic medicine program in the United States. The college offers three degree programs: a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine, a Master of Acupuncture, and a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND). Many certificate programs in natural health specialty fields are also available to students enrolled in a degree program.

Students in the ND program study prevention, holistic wellness, and natural healing practices. The last two years of the four-year program are dedicated to field observation and mentorship at the NCNM teaching clinic. Students are required to put in 240 hours of observation and training, 145 of which are with licensed naturopathic physicians. Program graduates are eligible to sit for board examinations in U.S. states and territories that license naturopathic physicians.

2. Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA

Bastyr University (BU) trains naturopathic physicians for licensed primary care practice in eligible states and territories. BU is supported by National Institutes of Health research funding and is the largest school for natural health programs in the United States. In addition to the ND program, the university offers degree programs in acupuncture and oriental medicine, exercise and wellness, midwifery, health psychology, human biology, and nutrition.

The naturopathic medicine program takes four to six years to complete and clinical training begins in the second year of study. Training is conducted at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Seattle, where 64 faculty members supervise student field experiences. The school also offers a five-year dual degree program leading to an ND and an M.S. in Acupuncture or Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
