Long Island, according to www.longislandindex.org, has faced some economic challenges since the 1990s. Until that point, Long Island's economy focused on the defense and aerospace industries. Now, the site reports a new economy is rebuilding, one centered around computer services, biotechnology, consulting and other business services.
To that end, according to the Current Employment Statistics Survey, the top five supersectors in Long Island are (from largest) trade, transportation and utilities; education and health services; professional and business services; manufacturing; and leisure and hospitality.
