About Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY

Long Island University's (LIU) Brooklyn campus was established in 1926 and is the original unit of Long Island University. Located in Brooklyn, east of Manhattan, the university offers degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels in traditional, evening and weekend classes. Students may choose from more than 200 academic programs. Long Island University is comprised of six campus clusters, all of which are located in New York. In addition to the Brooklyn campus, LIU has campuses in Brookville (C.W. Post), Riverhead, Rockland, Westchester and Brentwood.

The campus boasts an 114,000-square-foot Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center (WRAC) with health and wellness services, a state-of-the-art workout environment and a 2,500-seat arena. LIU also offers many career services to its students, including resume and cover letter development, mock interviews, career fairs and one-on-one career counseling. LIU's athletic team is the Long Island Blackbirds. More than 11,200 students attend the Brooklyn campus as of 2011.

Long Island University's Academic Schools and Colleges

Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is the university's oldest academic unit. It began as the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1886 and has since educated more than 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Pharmacy students may choose from the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) professional degree program or the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmaceutics, Master of Science (M.S.) in Pharmaceutics, M.S. in Pharmacology/Toxicology and M.S. in Pharmacy Administration or Drug Regulatory Affairs programs.

Richard L. Conolly College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers degree programs within four divisions: communications, visual and performing arts; sciences; social sciences and humanities. Students may choose from dual degrees or graduate degrees. Each division comprises degree and certificate programs in areas such as philosophy, communication sciences, biology, mathematics, psychology and music.

School of Business, Public Administration and Information Sciences

The School of Business comprises the Master of Public Administration program, the Department of Managerial Sciences, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Accounting, Taxation and Law. Each department offers its own certificate and degree program options. The school has many student-led organizations and associations including the Accounting Society, Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the Finance Club and Pi Alpha Alpha.

School of Education

LIU's School of Education comprises the Department of Teaching and Leaning (TAL) and the Human Development and Leadership (HDL) program. TAL offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs; some result in teaching certifications. The HDL offers graduate programs in educational leadership, school psychology, mental health counseling and school counseling. Coursework combines with intensive fellowships and internship programs.

School of Health Professions

The school prepares students for careers in occupational therapy, athletic training, sports sciences, physical therapy, social work and physician assistance. Each of the aforementioned divisions offer undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degree programs. Students participate in hands-on learning activities at affiliated medical centers and healthcare organizations.

School of Nursing

LIU's School of Nursing offers a bachelor's degree for students without a nursing background, as well as an RN-Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program for nurses who do not have a bachelor's degree. In addition, the school offers an accelerated degree track, two dual-degree programs, several graduate programs and certificate programs. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredits the school.

Global College

The Global College was originally called Friends World. The college has centers in the U.S., China, India and Costa Rica. Students at the Global College pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies. Students are also asked to focus on key regions of the world and are trained in anthropological and sociological methods and theories.

School of Continuing Studies

The School of Continuing Studies comprises such areas as the English Language Institute, Legal Studies Institute and Personal Enrichment Institute. Programs touch upon surgical technology, vascular technology, cardiac technology, legal studies and other realms. The English Language Institute is one of the largest English programs in New York City. The Legal Studies Institute and the departments of surgical technology and vascular technology offer several certificate programs.
