Louisiana General Information

In Louisiana, the top universities are all public schools. There are some notable private schools; however, such as Tulane and Grambling. For a two-year degree or to study for a career, the Louisiana Community and Technical College system has nine locations across the state. The Louisiana State University system is most known for the main campus in Baton Rouge, but it also has four other campuses across the state. In the entire state there are 142 colleges and universities.

1. Louisiana State University

Louisiana State College in Baton Rouge is the largest of Louisiana's top colleges and universities. The school was founded in 1853 under the name Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy and it was located in Pineville, Louisiana. LSU was created when Louisiana State and Agricultural & Mechanical College and Louisiana State University merged in 1877 and the college moved to Baton Rouge. Louisiana State University has more than 180 degree programs separated into nine different senior colleges and four schools. The nine senior colleges include: E.J. Ourso School of Business Administration, Manship School of Mass Communications, College of Music & Dramatic Arts, College of Engineering and the College of Basic Sciences.

2. University of Louisiana at Lafayette

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is another one of the top Louisiana colleges and universities. The University of Louisiana offers 80 undergraduate and 29 graduate and one post graduate degree programs. The degree programs are divided among ten colleges and schools, including: BI Moody College of Business Administration, College of Arts, College of Education, College of General Studies and the College of Engineering.

3. Southeastern Louisiana University

Southeastern Louisiana University has grown from a two room college housed in a local high school to one of Louisiana's top colleges and universities. It is located in Hammond, LA, and has more than 16,000 students. Southeastern consists of five different colleges and 26 academic departments and offers over 70 degree programs for students of all ages. Top areas of study at Southeastern Louisiana University are management, elementary education, general studies and registered nursing.

4. Louisiana Tech University

Another one of Louisiana's top colleges and universities is Louisiana Tech University, located in Ruston, LA. This four-year school was founded in 1894 and offers programs for students in a wide variety of bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. LTU offers over 100 different programs in five academic divisions. The most popular programs are: finance, electrical engineering, elementary education and liberal arts.

5. Southern University and A&M College

Southern University and A&M College is also one of the top Louisiana colleges and universities. It is located on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, LA.
