Massachusetts has excellent career opportunities to offer anyone looking for a job or thinking of moving to the state.
Careers in Healthcare and Health Technology
The population is not only growing older but they are living longer. This has created a need for healthcare professionals and technologists. According to the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development (DWD), the number of available jobs in the healthcare system was over 13,000 in 2003 and the need for healthcare professionals is expected to increase in the coming years.
The Boston Globe, bostonworks.boston.com, recently wrote that job prospects for nuclear medicine technologists are particularly bright, with a 14% vacancy rate in hospitals across Massachusetts. Other occupations that are seen to offer good job prospects are: medical assistant, personal home or health care aid, social or human services assistant, medical records and health information technician, home health aide, physician assistant, physical therapist assistant, speech-language pathologist, and mental health and substance abuse social worker.
Careers in Information Technology
Massachusetts is considered a high-tech state coming in fourth behind Colorado, Washington and Virginia according to Progress Policy Institute (PPI), www.ppionline.org. The Boston Globe states that information technology specialists with demonstrated abilities in healthcare and life science will be in-demand.
What other jobs will be good bets in the coming years? How about a computer support specialist, a computer software engineer, a network systems and data communication analyst, a network and computer system administrator, a desktop publisher, or a database administrator?
Other Fastest Growing Careers
If you are interested in law enforcement, police patrol offices, security officers, or correctional officers may be an option. Teaching is another area to consider. Special education teachers, teacher's aids and secondary school teachers are expected to enjoy good job opportunities along with bill and loan collectors and legal and paralegal assistants according to DWD.
