About Miami University
Miami University in Oxford, OH, was founded in 1809, but did not begin serving students until 1824. After a brief closure during the 1870s and 1880s due to funding issues, the university was able to reopen in 1885. Currently, the university maintains five campuses with the main campus located about 35 minutes north of Cincinnati. Regional campuses are in the Ohio cities of Hamilton, Middletown, and West Chester; the school also has a European center in Luxemburg.
U.S. News and World Report ranked Miami University third best in the nation for undergraduate teaching in 2012. It has also been listed as a top 100 best value by Kiplinger every year since 1998.
Miami University is a public institution that offers degree programs in more than 100 areas through its six colleges and schools. Associate's, bachelors', master's, and doctoral degree programs are awarded in a variety of disciplines. Some certificate programs are also available.
Business, marketing, accounting, and related subjects were the most popular bachelor's degree programs at the university in 2011, with 931 degrees being awarded that year. Miami's business program, offered through the Farmer School of Business, is ranked 23rd in the US, and its entrepreneurship program is among the top 20 in the nation.
Other academic divisions at Miami University include the College of Arts and Science, the School of Creative Arts, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of Education, Health, and Society. There is also a Graduate Studies school offering over 50 master's and 14 doctoral programs.
Prospective Miami University students may apply using the Common Application and Miami supplement, both of which are found on the university's website. Submitted materials must include one teacher recommendation, an official high school transcript, and SAT or ACT scores sent from the testing agency. A $50 fee or official fee waiver form is also required when submitting the application and supplement.
Some of the university's programs have requirements in addition to the standard admissions application. Many creative arts majors must audition or submit a portfolio of work for their chosen area of study. Honors Program applicants are required to write an essay as part of the admissions process.
Tuition & Financial Aid
The 2012 tuition rate for an undergraduate Ohio resident is $13,067 per year, including instructional and general fees. Housing, meals, and additional fees for facilities and transportation bring the estimated annual cost to $24,143. Non-resident undergraduates can expect to pay approximately $39,707 per year with the same fees and room/board rates, but a higher base tuition rate of $28,631.
Three-quarters of Miami University students received some form of financial aid for the 2010-2011 academic year. Tuition may be offset by scholarships, grants, or wages earned through work-study programs. Federal and private student loans are also available.
