About Monmouth University

Monmouth University, a private not-for-profit university, was established in 1933. It began as Monmouth Junior College, growing throughout the years and receiving university status in 1995. A key building on the 156-acre campus is Woodrow Wilson Hall, built in 1929. Monmouth acquired this building in 1956; in 1985 it would be designated as a National Historic Landmark, and it now serves as the center for the school's administration.

The campus is located in West Long Branch, New Jersey, within walking distance to the Atlantic Ocean and its beaches. In addition, New York City and Philadelphia are a short commute from Monmouth University.

The Princeton Review has listed the university in its 'Best Colleges' guide for the past seven consecutive years. In 2012, G.I. Jobs magazine named Monmouth a military-friendly school.

Academics

Monmouth University offers approximately 54 degree programs, 33 of which are undergraduate programs. There are eight schools on campus, and an average class size of less than 22 students. Among the Monmouth schools, the Leon Hess Business School received recognition in the Princeton Review's 'Best 296 Business Schools' 2013 Edition.

The Monmouth University Library houses several special collections including Rare Books, Medieval Manuscript Leaves, The Lewis Mumford Collection, The New Jersey Collection, and The Springsteen Collection. Within the Rare Books collection, there are early printings of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Paine's Common Sense, and a first edition of A Room of One's Own signed by Virginia Woolf. Some of the pieces in each of these special collections are available for viewing online.

Admissions

As part of the application process for prospective undergraduates, a $50 application fee is required. In addition to the application, prospective undergraduates need to submit an official high school transcript or GED scores and either ACT or SAT scores. Early action applications are due December 1, and applicants are notified of their admission status by January 15. The standard application deadline is March 1st, and notification is given April 1.

As part of the application process, prospective students who would like to live on campus are encouraged to submit a housing application. Housing is guaranteed to freshmen who submit enrollment and housing deposits by May 1. On-campus housing is limited, and is assigned based on a lottery-styled drawing.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Because Monmouth University is a private institution, state residency is not taken into account to determine costs of tuition, but tuition costs do vary by program level. Effective May 2012, undergraduate tuition was $14,541 per semester, and graduate tuition was $922 per credit. Additional costs to consider are books and supplies, housing, and transportation.

In the 2010-2011 academic year, 99% of first-time undergraduate students received some type of financial aid. Currently, available aid options range from federal grants to student loans. In addition, prospective students are considered for institutional scholarships based on academic performance, and an additional financial aid resource for military veterans is called the Yellow Ribbon Program. Monmouth University also offers payment plan options administered through Tuition Management Systems, allowing students to pay tuition and fees in installments.
