Ohio University Couple Wins Education-Portal.com's Win Free Textbooks for a Year Giveaway

Sep 14, 2011

When Aundrea Bentley's boyfriend told her about Education-Portal.com's Win Free Textbooks for a Year Giveaway, he didn't actually expect that she'd win. And he really didn't expect that he'd win $500 for telling her about the giveaway. A happy surprise later, they've joined our long list of scholarship and award winners.

Take Free Courses. Earn Real College Credit.

Most free courses don't lead to college credit. Education-Portal.com's free courses do!

Here's how it works:

  1. 1. Watch free video lessons.
  2. 2. Pass an exam to earn real college credit.

Congratulations to Aundrea Bentley, the winner of our Win Free Textbook's for a Year Giveaway! Aundrea is a student at Ohio University who has struggled with the high costs of textbooks, up to $400.00 for one quarter's worth of textbooks!

$85 for a Book and You Don't Even Get to Keep It?

Aundrea admits to having had no money-saving tactics her freshman year, but over time she learned to save money on textbooks by using online textbook rental services or sharing textbooks with friends when possible. 'But even with renting, it's still very expensive. I just rented one of my textbooks for journalism class and it was $85.00. That's ridiculous.'

Aundrea's woes did not go unnoticed by her boyfriend, Bryon McElwee. Bryon, another University of Ohio student, came across our Win Free Textbooks for a Year Giveaway on Facebook and remembered Education-Portal.com from his own school search. 'I recognized Education-Portal.com from when I was still looking for places to go to school. I used that site as a high school senior.' He knew that the giveaway would be a good fit for his girlfriend, who was frequently stressed about high textbook prices. 'Like most college kids, we complain about the price of textbooks. I figured she'd be interested.'

High Textbook Costs Lead to Romantic Dinners?

Interestingly, Bryon didn't enter himself. 'I never actually expect to win contests, so I don't really enter them. I just told Aundrea about it.' Luckily for Bryon, Aundrea did win the $1000 grand prize, and since she listed him as her referrer he received our $500 referral prize.

Bryon telling his girlfriend about Education-Portal.com's Win Free Textbooks for a Year Giveaway ended up working out well for both of them. While Aundrea is grateful that Bryon informed her of the giveaway, she thinks he should also be grateful that she remembered to mention him as her referrer, since he won $500. 'I told him he owes me dinner for that one!'

In addition to the free dinner, Aundrea's looking forward to not having to devote as much time to working during the school year to help pay for her education. 'Winning the money to pay for my textbooks is a huge relief because adding up the costs of my textbooks for the quarter is always heartbreaking. By having free textbooks, I won't have to spend as much time working during the school year to offset costs. That way I will be able to focus more time on my studies and spend more time looking for internships and other opportunities to gain extra knowledge.'
