Online Agriculture (Ag) Courses and Classes Overview
Agriculture (Ag) courses which are taken for general knowledge or in pursuit of a degree are offered in many formats, including video and web, on campus and almost fully online. Students taking online agriculture courses may find most of their courses offered through distance learning or online, although some may need to be completed on campus.
Online Agriculture Courses Overview
Online agriculture courses offer a variety of fields of study, including crop and soil science, animal science and agricultural business management. Although not all agriculture courses are available online, depending on the college, students can usually take most of their courses online through a distance learning program. Online agriculture courses can be taken as individual classes to expand knowledge of agricultural practices, or can lead to certificates or degrees, including bachelor's and master's degrees.
Online Course Requirements
Online agriculture courses are taught via the Internet so students must have a computer with Internet access, preferably high-speed. Students need a valid e-mail address for instructor/student communication. Some agriculture courses may list biology or chemistry as a prerequisite.

Ag Safety and Health Course
This course teaches students the many hazards connected with agriculture, along with effective methods of controlling or preventing them. Focus is on livestock, pesticides, heavy machinery, and other things typical of an agricultural work setting. This course is suitable for students interested in pursuing a career as a county extension agent or Ag instructor.
Principles of Soil Science Course
This course teaches the function that soil performs for the environment as well as the physical, chemical and biological nature of soils. Students learn how the type of soil can determine the environment. The course demonstrates how land management can affect the durability and quality of soil. This class consists of lecture and lab assignments.
Sustainable Nature Resource Management Course
This course covers the different practices and policies that help make natural ecosystems and resources more sustainable both economically and ecologically. Students learn methods of sustaining natural resource so as not to jeopardize the ecosystems of the future, while still meeting the needs of today. This course is often taught through the Blackboard Organization, an electronic option providing student interaction.
Vegetable Production Course
Students learn the methods and principles of growing and marketing over a dozen U.S. grown vegetable crops. Other topics covered in this course include type and origin of seeds, pest management, sustainable agriculture, food safety issues and consumer concerns.
Mineral Nutrition in Plants Course
This course teaches the importance of nutrients for optimum plant growth as well as how nutrients affect crop performance. Students gain a thorough knowledge of soil fertility, plant nutrients and foliar fertilization.
Soil Fertility Course
This course addresses the influence soil has on plants and their nutrients. Students identify soil fertility and nutrition problems and decide the correct remedy. Students learn the most effective ways to maximize crop growth through use of nutrient and soil management.
