Online Classes and Career Education for Sonogram Technicians
Sonogram technicians work with ultrasound waves to take diagnostic images of patients instead of using x-rays. These procedures are increasingly being used because of their non-invasive nature. Students can find online certificate and degree programs in sonography and diagnostic sonography at many postsecondary schools.
Online Programs for Sonogram Technicians
Sonogram technicians who'd like to take classes online and complete a formal education program can enroll in distance learning certificate, associate degree or bachelor's degree options. Typically, these programs require that applicants already hold professional certification, such as those offered through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Clinical training is generally not part of the curriculum since it cannot be conducted online, and so only working, certified professionals will already have the requisite hands-on training and skills.
Curriculum
Many sonography programs begin with general sonography topics, such as abdominal, obstetric, gynecologic and small organ sonography. Advanced classes cover specialized areas of sonography like cardiac and vascular sonography. Additional classes may include healthcare, leadership, organizational behavior, principles of management, psychology and healthcare financial management.
On-Campus Visits and Clinical Work
While some programs don't require any campus visits, others may have minimal periodic in-person requirements. In cases where clinical work is required, arrangements need to be made at a nearby location that meets the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography standards.
Online Course Delivery
Most schools offer online learners their course materials through an online course management system like Blackboard or Angel. Lessons and assignments are exchanged electronically. Students can also access student discussion boards, chat areas and email. Online exams, presentations and interactions with other students are also common requirements of online courses. Some schools require that online students participate in an online learning orientation session.
Technology Requirements
Schools may specify that students need to have a computer with a specific operating system. Some specialized software applications, like Flash or Java, may also need to be installed.
