Online First Responder Courses, Training and Certification Information
First responder courses are available fully online in standalone format or as part of emergency medical technician (EMT) training programs. However, some topic-specific advanced courses are only available on-campus. Most online first responder courses are open to high school graduates and include no other prerequisites.
Overview of Online First Responder Courses
First responders are EMTs, including firefighters and law enforcement agents, who provide initial patient assessment and care in the case of emergency injury or illness. First responder training courses typically are offered at community or technical colleges and result in a diploma or certificate. Licensure is required in all 50 states, but requirements vary. Most states require national certification, which is available through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Additionally, first responder refresher courses and continuing education generally are required for recertification or maintenance of licensure. First responder training can lead to occupations like firefighter or paramedic.
Courses are completed using a computer with high speed Internet access. Online bulletin boards typically are used for course communication. Software such as Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint might be needed.
