Security guard classes and training programs are available online through many organizations, agencies and vocational schools. These classes and programs can be taken totally online and typically result in certification or a certificate of completion.
Although security guards typically only need a high school diploma or GED to become employed, most states do require guards to be licensed. Security guards who provide armed protection are often required to obtain further training and licensing by various government agencies. Most employers also require applicants to pass a drug test and background check prior to employment.

Powers to Arrest Course
This course addresses the overall duties and responsibilities of a security officer relating to the arrest of an individual. It teaches students how to effectively handle an arrest situation, covering topics such as escalation and de-escalation of force, legal implications in trespass and restraint techniques.
Weapons of Mass Destruction Course
This course familiarizes students with techniques for properly identifying and reporting possible terrorist activities. Terrorism is studied, and different weapon types are covered in order to equip security officers with the ability to assist and protect others in the case of a terrorist event.
Public Relations Course
Security guards are taught ways to avoid stereotyping that borders on discrimination. This course teaches students proper conduct in response to discriminatory attitudes in the workplace. They learn to recognize signs of aggression, substance abuse and mental illness.
Observation and Documentation Course
Students learn observation and patrol methods, leading to accurate report writing. They are taught how to ask appropriate questions and recognize signs of suspicious activity.
This course covers internal and external modes of communication for security officers. Students learn the proper usage of radios and monitors for internal communications. When and how to contact external support, such as law enforcement, emergency responders and other government services, are a focus of this course.
Liability and Legal Aspects Course
Students learn about the legal implications of working as a security guard. Topics such as personal and employer liabilities are covered. Students also study various criminal, civil and administrative laws as they pertain to security work.
