Pet Groomer: Online Diploma
Research online pet grooming diploma programs. Get information about online courses, certification options, requirements and job prospects to make an informed decision about your education.
Online Diploma in Pet Grooming Overview
Online programs in pet grooming are rarely available, although some schools offer diplomas that students can complete at home, using the Internet to supplement their studies. Part of the reason for the lack of online programs is students must gain practical experience working with animals and trimming their fur. These programs explore dogs and cats and their personalities, pet grooming tools and types of cuts. Individuals who're interested in pet grooming may also enjoy other programs that involve working with animals, such as veterinary technology and animal caretaking.
Program Information and Requirements
The online diploma in pet grooming can take as little as seven months to complete. However, since pupils complete the program entirely on their own time, it can take as long as they need. Programs may include textbooks, including lesson plans and grooming tools, in the mail. They work at their own pace to complete the program one lesson at a time. Students can often contact the school via telephone or Internet for support or if they have questions or concerns.
List of Common Pet Grooming Courses
The online diploma program solely includes courses pertaining to pet grooming and the business of pet grooming; no general education courses are necessary. Students can typically access the courses through the school's website using their student identification number provided.
Dogs and Cats
This introductory class provides information about the anatomy and physiology of dogs and cats, basic methods for taking care of pet health and ways to inform pet owners about things that can affect their pet's health. Learners study different breeds of dogs and cats, the personalities associated with each breed and methods for handling them.
Grooming Set-Up
Participants explore the materials they must have to groom animals. They learn about kennel and crate maintenance, flea products, brushing techniques and nail clipping.
Dog Grooming
This class explores different dog breeds, including terriers, toy breeds, herders, poodles, sporting breeds, hounds and the cuts that fit them best.
Cat Grooming
Learners identify the problems groomers face when working with cats and kittens. They study procedures for handling cats, brushing techniques, shaving techniques and ways to dry them.
The Grooming Business
This class provides enrollees with information about a typical grooming business so they can set prices, provide good customer service, manage payroll accounts and keep records.
Career Information for Graduates
Graduates can become pet groomers for a kennel, a dog store, a veterinary clinic or their own grooming business. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that the employment of nonfarm animal caretakers, which includes pet groomers, would increase by 21% between 2008 and 2018 (www.bls.gov). As of May 2010, the median annual salary for nonfarm animal caretakers was $19,550, according to the BLS.
Continuing Education Information
With some job experience, graduates can become self-employed by owning their own pet grooming business. Certification as a National Certified Master Groomer is available through the National Dog Groomers Association of America (www.nationaldoggroomers.com), which involves passing a written exam.
