Wichita State University

Wichita State University opened in 1895 as Fairmount College, eventually taking on its current name in 1964. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission to grant associate through doctoral degrees. In fall 2010, 14,806 students enrolled to take classes at the school. The university is composed of six academic colleges, including the College of Engineering.

In 2011 rankings, U.S. News and World Report ranked the undergraduate engineering programs at Wichita State University144th in the nation, and the graduate programs 107th. The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department offers two degree programs in computer science that also include courses in computer programming. In 2011, the department awarded 72 bachelor's and 48 master's degrees.

Computer Programming Programs

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

In required professional courses, students in this program learn about programming in various languages and about programming with objects. They learn to analyze a problem and express a solution in a computer program created in the C- language. In a course on programming language concepts, students learn about the differences between functional, logic and imperative languages as they explore computer programming theory. The degree program requires the completion of two electrical engineering project classes, plus others in logic, physics and mathematics.

Master of Science in Computer Science

This graduate program offers a degree of flexibility. Students may choose to undertake a thesis or a project, or can opt for a courses-only plan in order to complete this program. They must complete at least two of the following courses: database introduction, computer science theory, algorithms and compiler construction. Study plans must include 18 credit hours and are determined in consultation with an academic advisor. The difference between the options is the number of credit hours devoted to course work. The thesis option requires 24 credit hours and six credit hours devoted to the thesis; the project option requires 30 hours of courses and at least three hours in a directed project, and the courses-only option requires 36 credit hours.
