Pros and Cons of Online Education

This article will discuss some of the pros and cons of an online education, which may help students to make more informed decisions when deciding which programs to enroll in.

As with any situation, there are both pros and cons with the concept of online education. You may want to evaluate both the pros and cons before you decide on an online education program. By examining the advantages and disadvantages, you will be able to to make a more informed decision.

Online Education Pros

Convenience

By taking courses online, you're able to decide when you study and for how long. You are also able to schedule your studying around your work or social schedule.

Since you're not bound to a classroom, you may do your work wherever you have access to a computer and the Internet. You'll be able to set your own pace and decide exactly how fast you want to go over the material.

Less Expensive

Online courses may be more affordable than those offered at colleges or trade schools. You may also save on transportation costs, including gas, bus passes or parking permits because you don't need to commute to school.

Typically, you can also save on housing costs and meal plans since you do not need to live on or near a college campus. Housing expenses and other costs associated with living expenses are usually the most expensive aspects of a college education, so by taking an online course you could save quite a bit of money.

Online Education Cons

Limited Social Interaction

Since you're not on campus or in classes, you may lack opportunities to meet other students. You will not have many opportunities to interact face-to-face with your professors, so they may not have a real sense of who you are as a person.

If you enjoy meeting new people and learn better while you're interacting with other people, you may want to reconsider online education.

Problematic for Instructors

Since the software is becoming more advanced, instructors are constantly trying to learn how to keep up. Some instructors who are more accustomed to traditional methods of teaching like lectures and handouts may have problems adapting to the new software, which can create problems for you.

A Final Thought on Online Education

For further information about online education, you could speak to someone who is actually enrolled in an online program or who has taken online courses.
