Job Description and Education Requirements to Becoming an SEO Account Manager

Job Description

A search engine optimization account manager or SEO account manager optimizes Internet search results. He or she is adept at Internet search tactics so that the company's website shows up in the top ten search results of search engines like Google, Yahoo!, or Bing. Other important tools that a SEO manager may use are pay-per-click advertising, social media, and link building. The manager writes reports and analyzes Web traffic.

Pay-per-click Advertising

The SEO may be responsible for pay-per-click advertising campaigns. The account manager tests the advertising campaign, copyedits the advertisements, and builds other strategies to optimize the number of clicks on ads. They may conduct research into the type of consumers that visit the website. They may also incorporate keywords in to the ad campaigns.

Social Media

The SEO account manager is also responsible to utilizing social media to drive business. Social media includes Facebook, Twitter, Four Square, Yelp, LinkedIn, and other websites of that nature. The work entails updating the company's profiles on each site to keep consumers up-to-date and to promote the business.

Link Building

Link building is becoming an important aspect of a SEO account manager's job. He or she researches other businesses similar to their own and offers to exchange links. This is important because search engine ranking is determined, to some extent, by the number of a website's incoming links.

Education Requirements

Earning a four-year degree, such as a bachelor's in marketing, may be helpful when seeking to become a SEO account manager. A marketing program fuses core business classes together with marketing theories and practices in the world of the Internet, management, and consumer behavior. The student conducts research and learns to analyze the resultant data in order to execute marketing strategies. They also develop skills to utilize technology and communicate effectively.

Salary Info and Job Outlook

According to PayScale.com, the majority of SEO account managers working in September 2014 earned between $30,496 and $63,210 per year. O*Net Online (www.onetonline.org) estimates that the employment of search marketing strategists such as SEO account managers will grow more slowly than the national average, at a rate of three to seven percent from 2012 to 2022. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates job growth for computer occupations, all others, which includes SEO account managers, at four percent during that decade.
