Schools for Aspiring Sales Engineers: How to Choose
Sales engineers are individuals with technical backgrounds who work to develop, market and sell the technological products of a company as well as explain how they function to the consumer. Bachelor's and master's degree programs in engineering are available across the U.S. that could prepare students to become sales engineers.
How to Select a Sales Engineer School
As an industry standard, sales engineers are typically expected to hold a bachelor's degree in engineering. For more advanced positions, such as senior sales engineer, students may find a master's degree in engineering advantageous. Where specialty options are available, students may choose to pursue a degree in electrical, mechanical or computer engineering.
Students with particular interests in a sales engineer field such as digital electronics or telecommunications may consider enrolling in programs that offer research or projects in these areas. These opportunities could offer practical experiences with the technology often associated with sales engineers.
At both the bachelor's and master's degree level, students may enroll in programs that offer distance education opportunities through online courses and lectures. Students who are already employed or who live too far from a prospective engineering college may prefer an Internet-based program for its schedule flexibility.
Because sales is a large part of this career, students may consider enrolling in programs that offer the maximum amount of sales experience. Schools that offer a minor in sales, specifically those that focus on engineering sales, could help students gain experience before graduation. Internships in sales environments could also be useful in this respect and could help students create real-world connections by gaining practical experience with a potential employer.
