School Overview

Working as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), also called a licensed practical nurse (LPN), requires licensing by the state; to achieve licensing students must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN), which is administered by National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Most programs are offered at the associate degree and certificate levels. Two good schools for LVN training are described below, and a broader list of options is also provided. Good Practical Nursing Programs in the U.S.

1. Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA

Also known as Penn College, the Pennsylvania College of Technology is an affiliated college of the Pennsylvania State University system. Penn College enjoys the 31st-place ranking among Northern U.S. schools by U.S. News & World Report in its 2011 publication of America's best colleges.

Accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), the School of Health Sciences offers a program leading to an Associate of Applied Science in Health Arts with an emphasis in practical nursing. Students spend 17 months in classes and field clinics to prepare for the NCLEX-PN and their future nursing careers. Exam eligibility can also be achieved through the school's 3-semester certificate in practical nursing program.

2. Dickinson State University in Dickinson, ND

Dickinson State University, which is part of the North Dakota University System, was named the 66th best Midwestern college in U.S. News & World Report's 2011 list of the nation's top schools.

The NLNAC-accredited Associate in Applied Science in Practical Nursing program offers 66 semester hours of courses and clinics to prepare students for their roles as LPNs. After successful completion of the curriculum, which includes topics in anatomy, nutrition, mental health counseling and pharmacology, graduates are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN. The North Dakota State Board of Nursing offers a Nursing Education Loan of $2,000 for students of associate practical nursing programs.
