The most common programs lead to an associate degree, but there are several accredited veterinary technology Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs available. 1. Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN

Purdue University is a state-funded university with a flagship campus in West Lafayette, IN. The school was named the 56th-best college in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2011. The veterinary technology program offered by the School of Veterinary Medicine leads to an associate degree in three years or a B.S. degree if a fourth year is completed. The associate degree option is also available in an online format, which is designed for employed veterinary technicians who want to continue their employment while pursuing the degree. This online program requires 17 credit hours of clinical field experience in a licensed veterinary practice.

2. Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI

MSU is a Big Ten school that offers over 200 programs of study to about 47,000 students each year. In 2011, U.S. News & World Report ranked MSU 79th among the nation's top colleges. The College of Veterinary Medicine offers a 4-year bachelor's program in veterinary technology. The program's fourth year is devoted to clinical internships and approved electives in subjects such as zoology, agribusiness and animal science. Also available from the college is an accredited Certificate of Completion program in veterinary medicine. The 5-semester program is a shorter option for those who already hold another degree but want pursue licensure as a veterinary technician.
