Top Baking and Pastry Schools and Colleges: List of Top Programs
Aspiring pastry chefs can pursue an associate's degree in baking and pastry arts through community or technical colleges. Bachelor's degrees do exist that combine baking and pastry arts with management or leadership. The Culinary Institute of America and Johnson & Wales University offer baking and pastry arts programs that lead to either an associate's or bachelor's degree.

1. Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, New York
The Culinary Institute of America was started in 1946 as the New Haven Restaurant Institute, and changed to its current name in 1951. Currently, the CIA has three campus locations in New York, California and Texas. The institute offers certificate, associate's and bachelor's degree programs in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, and wine and beverages. Aspiring pastry chefs can pursue an associate's degree in baking and pastry arts or a bachelor's degree in baking and pastry arts management. Both programs provide real-world experience through internships, externships and opportunities to work within the institute's pastry restaurants. The CIA was listed in U.S. News and World Report's 2011 Best Colleges.

2. Johnson & Wales University (JWU) in Providence, Rhode Island
Originally founded as a business school in 1914, Johnson & Wales University expanded through the years to offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in areas that include technology, education and culinary arts. JWU has four campuses in Rhode Island, Florida, Colorado and North Carolina. Within the College of Culinary Arts, students can pursue an associate's or bachelor's degree in baking and pastry arts. During both the associate's and bachelor's programs, students are required to complete an internship either locally or abroad. U.S. News and Report included JWU on its 2011 Best Colleges list.
