Child psychologist study the development of children from birth to adulthood. A child psychology program applies biological, genetic, cognitive, lingual, perceptive and social behavior to the diagnosis and treatment of children with mental disorders. A doctoral degree is required to practice clinical child psychology or perform research. However, undergraduate programs prepare students for a career in teaching or continued education in advanced graduate study.

Best Schools for Child Psychology

1. University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

In 1925, the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota (U of M) pioneered the study of child psychology and development in the United States. The school offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Child Psychology with a strong research focus. Students can specialize in child development areas such as cognitive, language, perception, social and personality development, as well as neuroscience and psychobiology. Those pursuing a doctoral degree in clinical child psychology may focus on child developmental psychopathology.

U of M also offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Child Psychology, both which prepare students for further study in the field. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science program may also pursue careers in early childhood education, social services and counseling. Coursework teaches students about adolescent disabilities, infant development, child psychology and language development.

The U.S. News and World Report named U of M's graduate psychology program eighth best in 2009 (www.usnews.com). In 2010, the Princeton Review ranked the school among the publications' Best Midwestern Colleges (www.princetonreview.com). The Ph.D. program is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

2. University of Kansas in Lawrence

The Clinical Child Psychology Training Program at the University of Kansas (KU) offers a Ph.D. in Clinical Child Psychology. The program coursework draws from the applied behavioral science and psychology departments. Its focus is research and teaching students how to clinically evaluate and treat children and adolescents.

Classes include child psychopathology, family therapy, ethical and legal issues, cultural diversity and social concerns. KU was ranked the 40th best graduate psychology program by U.S. News & World Report in 2009 and is accredited by the APA.
