1. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, IL

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign houses an engineering college that ranks second in U.S. News and World Report's 2010 list of the best civil engineering graduate programs. U of I's College of Engineering offers a civil and environmental engineering program that awards master's degrees in civil engineering, environmental engineering in civil engineering or environmental science in civil engineering. Master's students have the option of whether or not to complete a thesis; if a thesis is submitted, 32 credit hours are needed for graduation, and without a thesis 36 credit hours are required. Degrees are also available in eight specialized programs and may be formatted to fit a student's specific needs.

2. Purdue University

Purdue's civil engineering graduate program landed among the top five in the country on U.S. News and World Report's 2010 list. Inside Purdue's School of Engineering, graduate-level civil engineering students can choose from specialty programs that include architectural, construction, environmental, geomatics, geotechnical, hydraulic and hydrologic, materials, structural and transportation engineering. Each of the nine programs of study has a specially designed curriculum specific to the content needed in that field. Every civil engineering program at Purdue has access to unique laboratory facilities to ensure that graduate students are receiving hands-on experience along with their classroom education.
