To become a practicing veterinarian in the United States, students must complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program and gain licensure. Two of the top accredited veterinary schools in the country are Cornell University and the University of Florida. Cornell is a top-ranked Ivy League school that also offers a Ph.D. in veterinary medicine, while UFL allows graduate students to focus their veterinary studies in public health, forensic toxicology and other subjects.

1. Cornell University in Ithaca, NY

Cornell University ranked 15th on U.S. News and World Report's 2014 list of best national schools in America, which makes Cornell the highest ranked university in the country that has a veterinary medicine college. The school offers a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree program, a DVM/Ph.D. dual degree program and a variety of graduate-level research programs in a variety of animal medicine fields such as neuroscience, reproduction and genetics. 2. University of Florida in Gainesville

The University of Florida is listed as 48th on U.S. News and World Report's 2014 list of top national universities in America. The university's College of Veterinary Medicine offers a variety of veterinary medicine programs including a DVM, a dual degree with a doctor of veterinary medicine and a master's in public health (DVM/MPH), forensic toxicology and a wide variety of graduate programs. The school's DVM/MPH collaborative program is designed for students interested in public health careers in government and industry in areas such as epidemiology, food systems and environmental control.
