1. Stanford University in California

A private school, Stanford University opened in 1891. It was ranked fifth on Forbes 2011 list of America's Top Colleges. The Stanford School of Medicine's Division of Oncology and Department of Radiation Oncology provide education and training opportunities for medical students and current physicians. Students can pursue a joint M.D./Ph.D. in Cancer Biology or enroll in a research fellowship or residency program, such as a 3-year clinical research fellowship in oncology or a 4-year residency program in radiation oncology.

2. Duke University in Durham, NC

Duke University is a private research school founded in 1838. Duke was ranked fifth on the 2012 U.S. News & World Report list of best medical schools for research in the nation. The Duke University School of Medicine offers a 4-year residency program to students with an M.D. who have completed a 1-year postgraduate internship in medicine. The program aims to train physicians to become skilled and compassionate radiation oncologists. Students engage in a high level of research during the program in order to prepare themselves for positions in clinical and academic oncology.

3. Washington University in St. Louis, MO

Washington University (WU) was ranked fourth on the U.S. News & World Report 2012 list of best U.S. medical schools for research. WU's residency program is for M.D.s who have completed a 1-year internship in medicine. The program is offered through the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Siteman Cancer Center. Residents research cancer biology, radiation, physics and principals of cancer pathology.
