Stanford University

Biomedical Engineering Programs

Bachelor of Science in Biomechanical Engineering

This program explores the interface between biology and mechanical engineering as it pertains to quality of human life. Students can earn the degree to satisfy pre-med or bioengineering graduate school requirements. Foundation classes include math, chemistry and physics, in addition to biology labs. Other courses on cells, tissues, and body systems provide a context for mechanical engineering applications to areas like skeletal growth and motion measurement. Students have the opportunity to work with faculty in ongoing research.

Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Computation

Participants in this program create computer models for biological structures and systems to help advance human health and medical treatments. Biology, math, engineering, chemistry, physics and computer science form a study framework. Advanced courses teach students how to apply computer models and simulations to molecular biology, organisms and human populations. Participation in an ongoing research project is required; options include genetic predisposition to drug responses and computer simulations of the human brain.

Master of Science in Engineering: Biomechanical Engineering

Like the bachelor's program in biomechanical engineering, this program combines studies of biology and engineering mechanics. Students gain competence in math and statistics, in addition to advanced knowledge of a chosen engineering topic, such as design or mechanics. Other courses and labs include cardiovascular biomechanics, orthopedic bioengineering, biomedical device design and tissue engineering. Basic biology is a prerequisite for this program. No thesis is required.

Master of Science in Bioengineering

Core classes and labs focus on biological systems analysis and quantitative biology. Students select two or more concentrations, such as biomedical computation and regenerative medicine. Technical electives include physical and life sciences, medicine, statistics and engineering, and are chosen to coordinate with focus areas. Seminars cover current research and ethics in the field. No thesis is required, but students have the option of taking an extra year to complete a research thesis and earn an engineering degree.

Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering

Doctoral candidates must have the equivalent of a bioengineering master's degree and a proven ability to conduct research. Advisors help students identify research interests and select a project and relevant courses. All courses are at the advanced level, and include topics such as medical imaging and orthopedic engineering. The doctoral program culminates in completion and defense of a dissertation based on a candidate's research.

Doctor of Philosophy/Doctor of Medicine in Biomechanical Engineering

The Ph.D./M.D. program is intended for those students who are interested in pursuing a career in clinical medicine while also performing advanced research in the field of biomechanics. Students must have a master's degree to enroll in the dual program. They must complete a doctoral thesis and qualifying examination before they can earn the degree.
