1. University of California-Los Angeles

The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) was established in 1919 and was ranked 25th on the U.S. News and World Report's 2011 list of best colleges nationwide. This quarter-based school system has eight biomedical engineering degrees available for students interested in genetic engineering at the graduate level, including the Master of Science (M.S.) in Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biosystem Science and Engineering, as well as biomedical engineering fellowships. Classes in the available graduate degree programs focus on topics such as biomedical systems, computational cardiology and tissue engineering.

2. Purdue University-Main Campus

The Princeton Review lists Purdue University as one of the best schools in the Midwest in 2010. Purdue's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering is accredited by the ABET's Engineering Accreditation Commission and offers a newly established undergraduate internship program. In addition to the undergraduate program in biomedical engineering, students can pursue a master's or doctorate degree in biomedical engineering, as well as a joint integrated M.S./Ph.D. program. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis, experimental design, electrophysiology, biomedical imaging and polymer synthesis are classes typically taken in these programs.
