Cincinnati State Technical and Community College

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is a 2-year, public college with locations in Cincinnati, Harrison and Mason, Ohio. It offers weekday, evening and weekend courses and, during the 2009-2010 academic year, enrolled more than 20,000 students. Almost 90% of Cincinnati State's graduates find employment within 6 months of graduating. The college belongs to the National Network of Health Career Programs in Two-Year Colleges, among many other professional organizations.

Roughly 24% of students at Cincinnati State chose to enroll in health care programs in 2009, making those more popular than any other programs at the school. The Health and Public Safety Division offers the medical assistant certificate under the multicompetency health technician subdivision. The Health and Public Safety Division also offers a certificate in health information management that prepares the student to work as a medical coding specialist.

Medical Assisting Programs

Medical Assistant Technical Certificate

Medical assistants complete clinical, administrative and managerial tasks within health care settings such as physicians' offices. The program, which can be completed in one year, includes a supervised clinical practicum as well as classroom lectures. Courses cover medical terminology, health care informatics, clinical procedures, biology, lifespan development, human disease and pharmacology. Students also take courses in billing and reimbursement procedures for medical offices, coding and insurance. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Health Information Management Technician Certificate

Students in the health information management technology program learn to maintain and manage health care records and information resources. Subjects taught in the program include ambulatory care and inpatient record classification, legal releases of medical information and patient databases. Students also learn to monitor compliance with facility accreditation standards. Although some of the core courses in this program have to be taken in person, others are available via the Internet.

Students who complete this program are eligible to sit for the American Health Management Association's certified examination for the registered health information technician credential. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education.
