Stanford University is a private research university that offers 18 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in over 70 areas of study. In 2010, Stanford placed sixth in Forbes magazine's ranking of America's best colleges.

The Graduate School of Business offers a Ph.D. in Business program for those interested in teaching and researching management studies at the university level. Seven specialized fields of study are offered, including accounting, marketing, organization behavior and political economics. The program takes 3-5 years to complete and requires students to participate in a summer assistantship that results in a research paper at the end of the session.

2. University of Chicago in Chicago, IL

The University of Chicago was founded by oil businessman John D. Rockefeller in 1892. Eighty-five Nobel laureates have been associated with the university, which was named the seventh best university in the world in 2010 by U.K. publication Times Higher Education.

The Booth School of Business offers the nation's oldest Ph.D. program in Business. From eight available specializations, students select a dissertation area and a support area. The specialization in managerial and organization behavior explores decision-making and human interaction within groups, while the management science/operations management focus uses mathematical and computer modeling to study the processes in production and distribution. Other available areas of focus include econometrics, finance and accounting.
