Though the city of Charlotte boasts a bustling restaurant scene, it offers only a few choices for students wishing to study culinary arts. Based on proximity, size, and hands-on opportunities, the top options are Johnson & Wales University - Charlotte (JWU), Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI). JWU is the most prestigious of the three schools, and the only one to offer a bachelor's degree, as well as an associate degree. While CCC&TI has a higher graduation rate, CPCC offers greater program diversity and is over 50 miles closer to downtown Charlotte. In addition to an associate degree, CCPC also offers certificate programs in pastry and baking with 3 possible specializations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, voluntary American Culinary Federation (ACF) certification is available for those entering the culinary field.

Johnson & Wales University's College of Culinary Arts offers a 4-year program that allows undergraduate students to earn 2 consecutive degrees. Students complete an associate degree in either culinary arts or pastry and baking, and then a bachelor's degree in culinary arts and food service management or baking and pastry arts and food service management. The school also offers an accelerated 1-year associate program for professionally experienced students, and an online bachelor's program for students with an associate degree. The Charlotte campus includes restaurant-style kitchens and dining venues, as well as a world-class Culinary Auditorium. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of contests, from competing with JWU's 3 out-of-state campuses to representing the school internationally.
