Florida State College at Jacksonville
Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is a 4-year, public college that primarily offers associate's degree programs. Formerly known as Florida Community College at Jacksonville, FSCJ enrolls more than 80,000 students annually as of 2011 - including those in online, continuing-education and military programs.
FSCJ was one of only 72 community colleges in the nation to receive a Community-Based Job Training government grant. A 2010 report by Community College Week, using information collected by the National Center for Education Statistics, ranked FSCJ eighth among all colleges granting associate's degrees in nursing. The college also offers the largest workforce development center for students in all of Florida.
Florida State College at Jacksonville offers medical assisting and nurse assisting programs through a division known as Florida Coast Career Tech. Florida Coast Career Tech's health care department offers programs in practical nursing, dental assisting, surgical technology, patient care technology and other subjects. Students gain hands-on clinical experience in local health care facilities, including hospitals, clinics and rehabilitative centers.
Medical Assisting Programs
Workforce Certificate in Medical Assisting
Students train to work in private medical offices, hospitals, care centers and clinics. They also study legal and ethical aspects of medical care, how to address patients' needs and effective communication between doctors, patients and other staff. After completing prerequisite courses in language, reading and mathematics, participants take courses in health careers, allied health, nursing and four levels of medical assisting. Enrollment candidates must be able to demonstrate knowledge of CPR.
Workforce Certificate in Nursing Assisting (Articulated)
Students prepare to work under the supervision of doctors and nurses in homes for the elderly, live-in care facilities, home health care, clinic or hospital settings. They complete 40 hours of practice in addition to 165 hours of health care career and nursing assistant courses. Upon graduation, they are eligible to sit for the state's Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exams.
