University of Houston
With a student population of roughly 38,500 individuals, the University of Houston is the largest institution within the University of Houston System. The Cullen College of Engineering is one of 13 academic colleges of the University of Houston. Its Department of Biomedical Engineering was founded in 2009. The department is situated close to TMC (Texas Medical Center), which is anticipating a growth of 50% in its operations within the coming six years. Biomedical Engineering Programs
Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering
The undergraduate biomedical engineering program allows students to choose from one of three options - biomedical design and analysis, biomolecular and neural engineering. Each track provides entry-level students with a strong foundation in biological science, chemistry, physics and calculus, generally taken in the first two years. Advanced courses cover biomechanics, circuit analysis, engineering mathematics, tissue engineering and bioanalytics. Undergraduate students have access to research opportunities and can opt to participate in a thesis program for senior students, administrated by the Honor College.
Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering
The master's degree program in biomedical engineering is offered in both a thesis and non-thesis format. Students who do not come from an academic background in biomedical engineering should have at least one year of biology, chemistry and engineering physics, as well as two years of calculus. Master's students must choose a concentration, such as biomedical imaging or rehabilitation and neural engineering.
Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering
The University of Houston allows students to enter into its biomedical engineering Ph.D. program with either a bachelor's or a master's degree. Students who have a master's degree are required to complete fewer core, elective and mathematics courses than do students who only have an undergraduate degree. All students are required to complete 30 credit hours conducting research and writing a dissertation. Ph.D. students must pick a concentration as a focus of their degree.
